Glossary

We aim to make all our hosting packages easy to use and even easier to understand.  If you see a term you don't understand on our website, check here. It will list and explain all of the terms we use.

Hosting:

This is the only way in which customers can access your website. Your website content is stored on a computer (or a server) which is directly connected to the Internet. Shared hosting involves several customers using the same server and sharing resources- greatly reducing the price. Virtual hosting or VPS (Virtual Private Servers) operate at a higher level, giving customers root level access and greater control. Finally, Dedicated Servers offer larger resources and custom built.

Disk Space:

The amount of hard drive space on the server that is available to your website. This is commonly expressed in GB (Gigabytes), and includes all your web pages, images and email. A Gigabyte is equivalent to over 400 music files.

Bandwidth:

Also known as Internet Traffic, it is a measurement of how much information is used/accessed on your website. Bandwidth is usually measured in GB and includes all uploads and downloads to and from your package.

Domains:

A Domain, or Domain Name is a unique address for your website. Instead of using IP addresses (72.14.207.99), we use a more memorable word or phrase to access the website (www.google.com).

Subdomains:

These are similar to domains in that they are an address to a website. They provide a third tier domain, as part of a parent domain. For example in the following URL: www.gmail.google.com, Gmail is the Subdomain and Google is the Domain.

ODBC DSN:

Also known as Open DataBase Connectivity, it is a software used on Windows based servers to provide access to Databases such as Microsoft Access, MySQL 5 and MSSQL 2005.

MRA:

A MRA, or Multiple-Recipient Alias, is a form of aliasing used on email. It enables you to mass send an email message to several email accounts just by sending it to one. These are commonly used in mailing lists, because it allows you to email all your customers at one time.

Webmail:

Webmail is a service that allows you to access your email anywhere. It uses your Internet browser to act as your email client, sending and receiving your email.

CMS:

A CMS or Content Management System makes website building easier. A CMS provides a user interface to make modifications to your website, normally via a web browser. It also manages your images, videos and music.

Joomla:

Joomla is a well recognised and award winning CMS. Visit Joomla for more information.

FTP:

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is the simplest method of accessing your website files over the internet. Using an FTP Client (such as FileZilla) it allows you to download, modify and upload your documents in minutes.

Dedicated SSL:

A Dedicated Secure Sockets Layer provides a method of encrypting and authenticating your information over the Internet. It creates a secure connection to the server, which keeps your private or personal information safe.

DNS Editor:

A DNS (Domain Name Service) Editor gives you the ability to manage your DNS for several important record names, including your mail, MX records and subdomains.
